DE is an effective potting mix component as it retains fertiliser and water against leaching resulting in reduced costs whilst promoting vigorous plant growth. It is a natural source of plant-available silicon, an essential plant nutrient. The highly absorbent porous DE can act as a slow-release carrier of nutrients and water.

DE is hydrophilic and significantly decreases the risk of desiccation of the potting mix during hot weather periods reducing plant stress. In nursery production the addition of DE to the growing medium of potted plants provides a very effective water retention system.

DE is composed of silica. The benefits of DE are:

 

• Contains other useful trace minerals/elements

• Causes no harm to the roots and plants of the plant.

• Increases water holding capacity, and aids nutrient retention

• Encourages beneficial microbial soil activity

• Boosts plant tissue strength, meaning more pest and disease resistance

• Converts locked up phosphorous into a plant available form

• Decreases soil salinity by diluting sodium content

• Maintains healthy soil structure

• Superior water absorption qualities
