WHAT IS DIATOMACEOUS EARTH?

Diatomaceous Earth also known as diatomite and DE, is a soft siliceous sedimentary rock that is mainly composed of 100% natural free fossilised algae known as diatoms or microscopic algae living near bodies of water. Diatomaceous earth is a mineral which contains amorphous silica and other trace minerals such as iron, calcium and magnesium.

Diatoms will grow in almost any environment that combines water and sunlight, allowing them to be found in both fresh and saltwater. Biologists consider them one of the most important groups of basic organisms; all other aquatic life to some degree depends on them.

Diatomaceous Earth is a multi functional mineral in that it is

  • 100% natural

  • Easy to use

  • Highly beneficial for soils in retaining water

  • Good for soil conditioning

Note: It is important to note that the Australian Government Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority have advised that DE is not registered under the Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals Code Act 1994 (Agvet Code). It is considered to be an offense to represent it as a product which "is represented as a means of destroying, stupefying, repelling, inhibiting the feeding of, or preventing infestation by or attacks of, any pest in relation to a plant, a place or thing and/or modifying the physiology of a plant or pest so as to alter its natural development, productivity, quality or reproductive capacity."

HEALTH WARNING: Care should always be taken and it is always recommended to always wear a dust mask, eye protection and gloves when using DE. Always wash hands after use as the tiny particles (though non toxic) can be drying to skin and hands and can be harmful if accidentally inhaled.
